From Sketch to Shelf: How a Printing Partner Can Help Your Greeting Card Business Grow

Working with publishers

You’ve got the ideas, the designs, and maybe you even have a growing fan base who love your unique take on greetings. But when it comes to getting those designs printed and ready to sell, things can get a little complicated. That’s where the benefits of partnering with a greeting card printing company really come into play.

For illustrators, small business owners, or anyone who is running a side hustle that’s starting to pick up pace, having a reliable print partner can take your card game to the next level, without you having to wrestle with home printers or make a hundred post office runs.

Why work with a professional greeting card printer?

First up: quality. Working with wholesale greeting card printers means your designs are printed using professional-grade equipment on high-quality stock. Using a printer that specialises in printing greetings cards, ensures that you get the perfect finish, colours that pop and cards that feel just right in your customers hands.

If you’re aiming to get stocked in stores, presentation really matters. Many UK greetings card companies know exactly what buyers and stockists are looking for, and we’ll help make sure your cards tick those boxes.

Save time and grow smarter

As your business grows, so do the logistics. Printing, packaging and postage all adds up, but with the right printing partner, you can streamline your process and save yourself time.

At The Imaging Centre, our online portal makes it easy to manage your card orders, from uploading new designs to reordering bestsellers. It’s fast, flexible and designed for creative businesses who want to scale without the admin overload.

Stay flexible!

With The Imaging Centre handling fulfilment from start to finish, you have plenty of flexibility to adapt your artwork to seasons or trends, or try out new ideas without having to spend big on large print runs. It’s the perfect way to keep your products fresh and perfectly aligned with what your customers love right now.

The Environmental Benefits of Print-On-Demand Greeting Cards

Sending a greeting card is a simple way to connect with family and friends, whether for a birthday or to celebrate a new job, or to show support in times of need… or just because you love them!

But what if that card could also help reduce waste and protect the environment? That’s exactly what print-on-demand greeting cards offer, combining thoughtful communication with a more sustainable approach to printing.

Traditional card production often involves printing huge batches that sit in warehouses or on shop shelves, with unsold stock eventually heading to landfill. Print-on-demand greeting cards, on the other hand, are made only when you order them. This means far less waste and no overproduction, which is a win for both the environment and your conscience.

What’s more – with print-on-demand you have the opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint because cards don’t need to travel halfway across the country (or the world) before they reach you. Choosing an eco-friendly printer close to home, means that you’re helping reduce unnecessary mileage while supporting sustainable business practices.

Our commitment to sustainable printing.

As an eco-friendly card printer, The Imaging Centre takes pride in going beyond the basics when it comes to sustainability.

We offer recycled and responsibly sourced paper, which ensures your greeting card not only looks beautiful but is also kinder to forests, wildlife and waterways.

By delivering directly to retailers, we are cutting down on unnecessary transport and carbon emissions. Additionally, our state-of-the-art warehouse is supported by solar power, our presses are carbon neutral, our inks are vegan-friendly, and our company cars are all electric.

We also make sure every sheet of paper is used wisely, and any leftover scraps, plus press consumables and foil offcuts, are responsibly recycled.

Over the years, we have significantly reduced our plastic usage and invested in smart, sustainable packaging that protects your products without the need for bubble wrap. While we still offer recyclable cello wraps for those who require them, a variety of eco-friendly alternatives are also available, allowing you to select the best option for your brand.

We proudly hold FSC® Certification (C001869), demonstrating our commitment to ensuring that exceptional greeting cards do not come at an environmental cost.

Supporting a Circular Economy

Looking at the bigger picture, print-on-demand is part of a wider movement toward a circular economy, which means creating only what’s needed, when it’s needed, whilst using materials that can be reused or recycled. It’s about respecting resources and rethinking how we consume, without losing the joy of sending something personal and heartfelt.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Alongside its environmental benefits, print-on-demand also offers clear financial advantages, particularly for publishers who are just starting out. By printing only what you need, when you need it, you avoid the risks of bulk ordering and the challenge of having money tied up in unsold stock.

As an artist or publisher, choosing print-on-demand greeting cards may feel like a small act, but when multiplied by millions of senders, the impact is huge. It’s proof that sustainable choices can be simple, accessible and still deeply meaningful.

Print Your Own Greeting Cards: A Guide for First-Time Designers

So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and begin creating and printing your own greeting cards – congratulations and welcome to the industry!

As you would expect, we’re big advocates for anyone who decides to let their creative juices flow and commit their designs to print to build their own creative business. Whether you’re an illustrator, designer or small business owner, this article will help you get on track by walking you through the essentials of custom card printing, all the way through from design to production, so you can bring your vision to life with confidence.

Step 1: Nail Your Design

Before you design greeting cards for printing, it’s vital to think about your audience. Are you creating birthday cards or niche-themed cards for specific occasions? It can be helpful to create a buyer persona – in other words, come up with some characters to visualise your ideal customer and what they might want from your brand and products. Once you know your purpose, keep these design tips in mind:

  • Bleed and trim: Always include a 3mm bleed to ensure your design prints edge-to-edge without unwanted borders.
  • High-resolution artwork: Aim for at least 300dpi to avoid pixelation.
  • Colour mode: Design in CMYK rather than RGB for accurate colour reproduction in print.
  • Typography: Make sure text is legible, well-aligned and doesn’t sit too close to the edges.

Step 2: Choose the right size and format

As greeting card printers, we recommend a good place to start is with the envelopes. Our machines can quite easily work with any size however, when it comes to envelopes, it’s not so straightforward. Use your envelope as a border, it should be around 5mm bigger than your card. Then, once you have chosen your envelope, make sure the artwork fits the space, and choose a layout (portrait or landscape) that complements your style. At The Imaging Centre, we offer a range of popular sizes, based on standard envelope sizes, all supplied creased and ready to fold.

Standard envelope sizes are C6 (114×162), 133×184, 125×175 and C5 (162×229). In square sizes, they are 130×130 & 155×155.

Step 3: Select the Best Paper Stock

Your choice of card stock can dramatically affect the final look and feel of your greeting cards. Whether you go for a smooth silk finish or a natural texture, the right paper enhances your design and adds appeal.

If you’re unsure, request a sample pack from The Imaging Centre to compare options before placing your order. You will then be able to touch and feel the quality with your hands, choose the design you want and have the REAL card produced and sent straight to your door – so you feel confident with your choice.

Step 4: Add Your Branding

Don’t forget the back of your card, which is prime real estate for your logo, website or social handles. Including your branding not only builds recognition but also makes your cards look professional and retail-ready.

Step 5: Print with Confidence

Once your design is ready, it’s time to upload your files and choose your print specs. At The Imaging Centre, we specialise in greeting card printing for creatives and businesses. Our easy online ordering system, fast turnaround and sustainable printing practices make us a trusted partner for first-time and experienced designers alike.

Final Tips

  • Proof: All of our publisher members can receive up to 30 free proofs every month. Proof for content, proof for colour, proof for quality.
  • Start small: Our minimum print run is just 6 of any one design. Print a small batch first to test the waters.
  • Order envelopes: Don’t forget the extras! We also supply a wide range of envelope types to complete the product.
  • Consider finishing touches: Options like cellophane wrapping or card bands can help protect and present your cards professionally.
